DAVID WRIGHT is the 2020 winner of the Graham Wilson Memorial Award for outstanding service to hockey journalism. The award is in memory of the former Daily Express journalist and former Hockey Writers’ Club chairman, who died in 2016.

David was the first winner of the Chris Moore Memorial Award for local hockey journalism in 1996 and his career has lasted 58 years since joining the Wokingham and Bracknell Times as a 16-year old.

 Sophie Bray and Sam Ward have won the prestigious UK hockey player of the year awards for 2019, voted by members of the Hockey Writers’ Club (HWC).

The winners of the 2020 Hockey Writers’ Club youth and junior awards for 2019 received their awards at the annual presentation lunch on January 15 at the Royal Thames Yacht Club, Knightsbridge, London.

The four inductees of the prestigious Hockey Writers' Club youth awards join an illustrious cast of past winners, including Rio Olympic Games gold medalists Maddie Hinch and Sophie Bray.

All HWC members are eligible to vote for the UK Mercian Men's Player of the Year and the UK Investec Women's Player of the Year. You can vote for at any time up to 6pm on 15 December 2019.  All UK members of the HWC are eligible to cast a vote. 

The awards will be presented at the HWC annual awards luncheon on 15 January 2020.

The Hockey Writers’ Club Annual Awards Lunch will take place on Wednesday 15th January 2020 at the Royal Thames Yacht Club, 60 Knightsbridge, London SW1X 7LF.

Thanks to all our members who voted. The winners will be announced at the  awards lunch. The sponsors for the main awards are once again Investec for the women’s, and Mercian for the men’s player of the year awards.

Other awards to be handed over on the day are the four youth awards and the Graham Wilson award for services to Hockey journalism.

The main speaker is the England and GM men’s manager Andy Halliday.

It is with regret that we learned of the passing of another hockey friend, David Meek. David was a big supporter of Brooklands Hockey Club where he will be greatly missed. We will also miss him at our annual lunch awards where he was a regular. David was of course well known for his work for the Manchester Evening News and Manchester United.

George Pinner wins Chris Moore award

It has been decided that the Chris Moore Award will this year be given to the outstanding UK player at the World League Semi-Finals in London, 15-25th June 2017. As we are expecting England games (we are unsure about Scotland) to be shown on BT Sport — see here — voting will be extended to include members who watch the games on television.

Peter Savage's life was celebrated by some 200 guests at the Kingswood Chapel, Worthing Crematorium, on Monday afternoon.

Those remembering Peter included Olympic Games gold medallists Helen and Kate Richardson-Walsh and England Hockey chief executive Sally Munday. Representatives of the Hockey Writers' Club and the Hockey Museum also attended.

The recipients of the Hockey Writers’ Club Higgins Group youth and junior player of the year awards for 2016 have been chosen with the presentations made at the annual awards presentation lunch on Wednesday January 25, 2017 at the Royal Thames Yacht Club, Knightsbridge, London.

Mr Richard Higgins, Chairman of the Higgins Group plc, will present the awards. The UK players of the year for 2016 will also be announced at the lunch.

The Hockey Makers, an enthusiastic organisation team of volunteers at the Champions Trophy, beat a depleted media team 6-3 on the main pitch at Queen Elizabeth Park on Thursday.

The Marjorie Pollard Award will this year be given to the outstanding UK player at the women's Champions Trophy in London. Voting is open to members who are at the tournament or who watch the games on television.

Voting for the award will close at 7pm on Saturday June 25, after GB's final pool game (vs Australia).

The HWC intends to present the award at the venue the following day.
